What are the benefits of the Puppy Life Skills Classes?

  • 8-week programme

(to give you maximum support and advice)

  • Small class

(4 puppies, up to 18 weeks old at the start, to ensure lots of individual attention)

  • Extra support

Access to my exclusive online puppy training video library and training notes

  • ‘Puppy Life Skills’ covers:

    - house training
    - mouthing
    - settling down
    - paying attention to you
    - coming back when called
    - being comfortable with handling (like at the vet and grooming)
    - making friends with other puppies and people (carefully supervised, not an overwhelming ‘free for all’)
    - playing fun games

How it works:

  • Week 1: Introduction (without puppies) including:

    • Puppy socialisation (what to do, what to avoid)

    • What to expect as your pup grows up (adolescence and how to cope!)

    • How to resolve common challenges (e.g. house training, nipping, over-excitement)

    • Answers to your puppy questions

  • Weeks 2-8: ‘Life skills’ training where you will:

    • Understand your individual puppy’s needs and capabilities

    • Learn simple management strategies for common problems

    • Learn how to train your puppy to understand what is expected

    • Provide your puppy with positive, confidence building experiences

  • You want your puppy to learn through kind, effective training

So many puppies develop behaviour problems as they grow up. From my experience and qualifications as a dog behaviourist, you will gain the understanding and tools you need to avoid future issues with your puppy such as aggression, fearfulness, and anxious behaviour.

Emma & Zion

Emma was absolutely delighted to welcome Zion, a Cocker spaniel puppy, into her family. But as a first-time dog owner Emma felt a little bit daunted about how training with her little bundle of energy might go!

She need not have worried, they fitted into the class beautifully and breezed through the training on my puppy course. Emma said, ‘We have thoroughly enjoyed the Puppy Life skills course with Julie! Our little cocker spaniel can be a handful, but each lesson is well thought out, adapts to each individual dog, and allows you to work at your own pace. As a first-time dog owner, I was worried about how I would be able to handle the training, but Julie has made it fun, enjoyable, and achievable. Our puppy has learned to make better choices at home and loves to discover new ways to please us. We’re so happy that we did this course and feel that it’s the perfect foundation for any dog to start learning’.

Zion showed just how much a puppy can flourish in the right class. And, most importantly how they can apply their new skills at home with the support of a dedicated human like Emma.

FAQs

Got a question you don’t see here?
Send me an email.

  • Without the distraction of keeping your puppy entertained, you will learn about why puppies do what they do and what to expect as your puppy grows up. Training is much easier when armed with this knowledge! You will also get to know your fellow human classmates in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. And realise it’s not just you with a puppy who mouths everything! You can also ask as many questions as you need.

  • Yes, absolutely! Socialisation is a critical part of their development and involves so much more than just playing with other pups. Many aspects of socialisation are covered on the course. Also, don’t worry if your puppy is a little timid at first. All training and socialisation activities are undertaken carefully to ensure that every pup gets what they need from the experience (including a bit of self-control for those who need it )

  • For many people this is a matter of preference. Some vets are happy for puppies to attend indoor classes before completion of their vaccination programme (you should check with your own vet). I have trained puppies both indoors and outdoors. In my experience, it is far less frustrating for you and your puppy to grasp the basic training that you need at this early stage without the distraction of the great outdoors. Of course, it is important that your puppy can pay attention to you and respond to your requests in any environment. This is where follow on classes will continue to build your puppy’s life skills.

  • If your puppy is older than 18 weeks at the start of the next available course then please contact me so I can advise you on other options.

  • Your needs may be better met via one of my dog behaviour packages. Please do get in touch if you’re not sure which to book.
