Dog to Human Behaviour Problems

in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire

Giving you and your dog the confidence to relax around other people.

You would love for your dog to feel happy and relaxed when people approach. Be that with visitors to your home, seeing strangers on walks or when your dog is in possession of something they value. Perhaps you feel sad when your dog tries to hide, or you worry that your dog’s behaviour might frighten or even hurt someone.

When your dog is anxious around people, it can be exhausting and very difficult to know what to do. It may even encourage you to avoid certain situations so that no one is exposed to your dog’s unwelcoming behaviour.

That’s why my ‘Dog to Human Behaviour Support’ option takes an educated, experience-led approach and is tailored to support you both using easy, confidence building steps.

Feeling relaxed around people

dog to human behaviour problems Bedfordshire

Julie has been fantastic in helping us to help our 14 month old Dachshund, Bertie who has a number of behavioural issues – all of which result from his anxiety. I am pleased to report that Bertie hasn’t had a guarding incident since Julie starting working with us. It has been a long process but we have a happier, more confident dog as a result. I would highly recommend Julie and I am very grateful for her exceptional knowledge and patience in helping us deal with our much loved (and much better behaved) Bertie.

Here’s an example of how others have benefitted…

Sandra and Mac

When Sandra adopted Mac from Romania, she fell in love immediately and set out to build a strong bond with him. When Mac started to growl, snarl, or nip at her when he felt afraid it made Sandra feel very sad and she started to doubt everything she was doing.

However, Sandra worked extremely hard and with the support of my Dog to Human Behaviour Problems option she was able to overcome the issues Mac was having. She said…

‘Julie has been an amazing behaviourist for our rescue Border collie Mac as well as the most supportive coach for us as first-time adopters. We booked the 3 months behaviour modification programme as well as the Saturday classes which we enjoyed thoroughly. Julie helped us understand our dog and see things from his perspective, which was crucial in creating a strong bond with him. It takes dedication, time and patience to understand and manage triggers for unwanted behaviour but Julie’s guidance was very well structured and achievable and the resources she provided were very helpful. Adopting a dog is an enormously gratifying experience but it comes with its challenges, particularly when rescuing a dog with history, and at times it can be overwhelming. Above all, it was the moral support and the reassurance that we were going in the right direction, that made our time together so worthwhile. Julie is a knowledgeable, understanding and compassionate trainer and behaviourist and I would heartedly recommend her to every dog owner I know’.

Through Sandra’s incredible empathy and patience with Mac she was able to build his confidence. The unwanted behaviours have all but disappeared and their relationship is now stronger than ever.

Got a question you don’t see here? Send me an email. Please include your phone number.

  • It is a requirement for membership of my professional bodies that I only undertake behaviour work on veterinary referral. This is because behaviour problems can arise from currently undiagnosed or previous medical problems. It may surprise you to learn that up to 80% of dog and cat behaviour cases involve pain (Mills et al., 2020). Therefore, before starting behaviour modification work it is important for your vet to first rule out / treat any underlying causes of the problem.

  • Don’t worry. That’s not unusual, and all unwanted behaviours can be addressed. You may just need to book additional follow up sessions so we can work through everything.

  • That’s not a problem. I will make a bespoke plan for you both to progress towards achieving your goals. This may involve working away from the immediate area of your home initially.

  • No, definitely not. I know from experience that it is important for both you and your dog to feel relaxed throughout all behaviour modification training sessions.

  • Changing your dog’s behaviour requires you both to learn new skills. The more you practice these the more progress you will make. Generally, the longer an unwanted behaviour has been happening, the longer you should expect it to take to change it. However, with my support and the simple techniques you will learn through the Dog to Human Behaviour Problems option you should start see improvements early on.
